Mother Hubbard's Cupboard's Statement on the 2025 budget reconciliation bill
July 10, 2025
The Hub is thankful for every individual and member of Congress, organization, and community organizer, who advocated for protecting SNAP and Medicaid in the lead-up to the passing of this budget reconciliation bill. Before we keep pushing, we want to take a moment of pause and sit with what this means for our community.
In the coming years, an estimated 12,000 Hoosiers in our service area will lose their SNAP benefits. A majority of those will be children. Across the U.S., an anticipated 11.8 million individuals will lose their Medicaid coverage. Many of those will be the same individuals facing a reduction or loss of nutrition assistance.
Our community is about to become more at risk of meal gaps and missed appointments. At a time when they most need a balanced diet to preserve their health, it will be harder to attain.
To date in 2025, the total number of individuals served in our pantry has increased 30%. We anticipate further increases in demand as our community begins to feel the impact of this budget – likely through at least 2028 as the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP roll out across 2027 and 2028. While it is hard to know that cliff is coming, we hope we can use that time to come together to intervene in the name of equitable, accessible nutrition and health care for all.
We will need your help to continue showing up. In the coming days and as state policy changes roll out in response to these budget cuts, we will share calls to action. We will amplify the impact these cuts have on our community members. We hope you’ll join in.
In the meantime, as a connected community becomes more important than ever, we hope you will invest in local food security. Keep your local little free pantry filled. Share your garden with your neighbor. Keep an eye out for upcoming meals at the Hub, where we’ll gather to chart our way forward. And, if you’re able, invest in our work as we keep our community fed, maintain a safe and inclusive environment where all are entitled to our services, and advocate for the food system we each deserve.
With appreciation,
Megan Betz, CEO and President, and the whole Hub team
