Volunteer at MHC

Due to COVID-19, we are not currently accepting volunteers at this time. We will update both our website and our Facebook page once we are able to safely reopen and take new volunteers. If you have any questions, please contact Liz at volunteer@mhcfoodpantry.org. We look forward to working with community members again once things are safe!

Pantry Volunteer

It takes many hands to run the MHC Food Pantry! Volunteers assist with a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to: assisting with unloading the delivery truck, stocking, working the front desk, assisting patrons at the deli counter, repackaging bulk goods. Lifting abilities preferred but not required.

Time Commitment: 2 hours per week, every week

Days and Times: There are pantry shifts open Monday-Friday, 11am-6pm.

Families are welcome to volunteer together as a group.

Food Bank Shopping Volunteer

Twice a week our trusty truck heads to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank to gather food for the pantry. Shopping volunteers assist with selecting the food from the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, loading the food onto our truck, and then trekking to MHC to unload the truck.  This position requires heavy lifting, preferably a minimum of 50 pounds.

Time Commitment: 2 – 3 hours per week, every week

Days and Times: Mondays 11am-1pm, and Wednesdays, 11am-1pm

Community Garden Volunteer

Come help us grow food for the food pantry while learning how to garden organically! Weekly workdates provide a space for gardeners of all abilities and experience levels to enjoy planting, harvesting, weeding, composting, maintenance and more. Tasks vary according to season, as we garden from April through October. Volunteers are welcome to drop in to any of the work dates listed on our Community Garden page; come once or join us the whole season! Kids under 12 are welcome with adult supervision.

Time Commitment: 1-2 hours, once or twice per week

Days and Times: April-October, Wednesdays 4-6 pm & Fridays 11 am - 1 PM at MHC Pantry Garden (any workdate cancellations will be posted on MHC's Facebook)

Composting shifts are available all year long.

Nutrition Education

Nutrition volunteers help make cooking ideas exciting and accessible for patrons! Nutrition volunteers can prepare fresh samples for patrons to try during pantry hours, help promote nutrition workshops and seminars, help with our weekly Kids Cook classes, research and compile nutritional handout and recipes, or share your expert knowledge with our clients through your own class.

Time Commitment: 1-5 hours per week, according to volunteers’ schedules

Days and Times: During pantry hours for some activities, other activities according to volunteers schedules.

Tool Share Volunteer

MHC’s Tool Share program builds access to home gardening, cooking, and food preservation by offering a free lending library to food pantry patrons.  Volunteers promote the tools available in the Tool Share by offering demonstrations with available cooking and gardening tools.

Time Commitment: 2 - 4 hours per week

Days and Times: Flexible

Group and Special Project Proposals

MHC has limited capacity to work with individuals and groups on projects, so we'd like to make sure the project aligns with our values as an organization. We ask that potential partners fill out this form to help MHC's staff understand proposed projects. To submit a proposal, please follow the link below.
